Lighting Under Water

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Light bulbs are fantastic devices that have enabled us to see in the dark and at night ever since they were invented by Thomas Edison in his lab. Light bulbs use electricity which makes it impossible to use everyday light fixtures underwater as the water would just short them out. Should you put them in a swimming pool, you might run the risk of electrocuting any of your swimmers. That doesn’t mean you can’t have lights under water, it just means you have to buy special underwater lighting built exclusively to handle being submerged. Swimming pools can look great at night with a light or two and midnight swimming can be a lot of fun. Homes with ponds and water features can look amazing at night with some strategically placed underwater lights. The running water created a wonderful shimmery reflection of the light that you just can’t get with regular above ground lighting.

Installing Wood Shakes And Shingles

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Nail the top edge of this underlayment just enough to hold it straight; the subsequent courses of shakes secure it down. The first strip of 18-inch felt is laid twice the exposure distance from the bottom edge of the starter course. So, if you are using 24-inch shakes with a 7-inch exposure, then the bottom edge of the first 18-inch strip of underlayment would be placed 14 inches from the edge of the eaves. Then the second course of shingles is applied. The bottom edge of each succeeding strip should be laid out 7 inches higher than the bottom edge of the previous one, overlapping all the way up. Lay the top pieces across the ridge. Weave the strips together during cedar shingles installation at the hips to make overlapped joints. When properly applied, the underlayment will not show on a completed roof.

It is important to lay the first course of shingles or shakes straight. To align them, place the first shingle so it overhangs the edge of the roof deck by 1 inches and the rake edge by about Vs inch. Place another shingle or shake the same way at the other end of the roof. Choose ones with straight, smooth sides along the rakes for a neat appearance. Stretch a mason’s line between the butts of the shingles. Align the butts of the first-course shingles or shakes along the line. To ensure that your courses remain straight, measure up from the butts of the shakes at each end of the roofevery three or four courses upand snap a chalk line as a guideline for the next course.

Why Steel Buildings Are Replacing Iron Buildings

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Steel buildings replaced iron ones for a number of reasons. Steel is essentially an alloy comprising of iron and carbon whilst iron is an element. Iron dates back to approximately 3000 BC in Egypt where it was used to make tools. Steel on the other hand went through many stages over the years starting off with perhaps Henry Bessemer who in the 19th century produced steel through oxidization. The question here however is that if steel is in fact the derivative of iron then why did it replace iron in buildings? The answer to this is fairly straightforward. The presence of carbon in steel strengthens steel and is stronger and tougher than iron, hence it lasts longer and is far more durable. Secondly, steel is far more flexible than iron and is therefore more suitable when it comes to building structures because it has the tenacity to be molded into different shapes and designs. In addition iron because of its properties will rust easily when it reacts with oxygen, moisture or even salt. Steel on the other hand is far more resistant to corrosion and because of this and the reasons mentioned above steel is increasingly becoming the first preference for building material.

Advanced Features of Garbage Disposals

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Sometimes you just feel like you can’t find what you want because there is not enough selection but that is not something you have to worry about with garbage disposal reviews because there is about anything and everything under the sun when it comes to garbage disposals.

If you want one that is very quiet you can get one of those and if you need one that will accommodate a septic tank then they have those kind of garbage disposals as well. Aside from having different power options for the motor there are differences in the grinding stages some have up to three different grinding stages and three blades that spin to chop up the food into more manageable pieces to go down the pipes.

Some of the advanced models do have an automatic reverse that helps to prevent jams in the event that something does get stuck down there it automatically kicks on.

Searching for Washer Belts

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Searching for washing machine belts on the web threw up many different choices of site to choose from. I like to repair my things my self, as I refuse to pay for an engineer when it is something I can do myself. I had to get a new belt as I noticed that my machine was making a very whiny sound, and this was due to the belt slipping on the drum. You may find that they become stretched and worn with prolonged use, and can even snap. I purchased my belt from yourspares and received it three days later. It was fitted with ease and now my washer seems to have a new lease of life. One little tip to buying spares on line, is to make sure you have your make and model number handy. Also some parts will have the number stamped on them, so it is always very beneficial to check first.

A Creative Way of Thinking

Monday, August 8th, 2011

One of my friends was throwing a huge party once. She told everyone to bring each their food, so she didn’t have to stand in the kitchen for hours cooking for everyone. I thought it was a great idea, and I instantly started on using my food dehydrator. I had cut up different fruits and spiced them up with all sort of different spices. After I had put the fruits in the food dehydrator, I waited for a couple of hours and when they were ready, I packed them all and was ready for the party the next day. When I arrived to the party, everyone had brought each their dish. But I noticed none of them were healthy. At first people looked weird at the dried fruits I had put out, but when they first started tasting it they were amazed that fruit could taste so amazing. Needless to say, the bowl of dehydrated fruits I had brought was empty after just an hour.

Security Turnstiles and Access Doors for Enhanced Safety

Sunday, July 31st, 2011

A lot of companies these days are enforcing entrance controls in several areas of their office buildings to prevent unauthorized people from gaining access to offices or rooms where vital information is stored, such as servers and human resources offices. These security measures are usually part of an overall strategy to reduce the risk of sensitive information being leaked to other companies, especially to the competition. The use of security turnstiles and card access doors have so far been the most popular among these entrance control equipment, and by now you have probably seen your office building having the same types of security measures aside from the usual CCTV cameras. These turnstiles and access doors can be customized according to the company’s needs regardless of control and security requirements. These can also be made depending on the number of people coming in and out of the building and the overall volume of foot traffic each day.

Knowing Paint Ratings Will Make You Wiser

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

You don’t get to repaint your house or your room too often. So before heading out to the nearest home improvement store, it would be better to consider much about the type of paint that will yield the best results. Do your homework, read as many paint ratings as possible so that you can be a savvier consumer. I’m here to give you some basic information about paints.

For interior painting, most people either use oil or latex, but both types have their own pros and cons. Oil paint seals better and it is weather resistant. Oil paint is especially recommended for metals and steels because latex paint doesn’t stick to them as well as oil paint. The only downside to oil paint is that it takes much longer time to dry. Likewise, in the long run it can crack and fade or become yellowish.

With latex paint, you will not have these negative experiences because it doesn’t crack, fade or chalk. It is also very easy to handle, as spills can be cleansed easily. Another good thing with it is that it’s non-flammable. However, unlike oil paint it is not resistant to stain seeping or to weather changes.

Thus far, I’ve shown you the pros and cons of oil paint and latex paint. After deciding which one you really like for your house, you can now go ahead and buy it and start painting your house.

Looking Down to Find Energy for Your Home

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

Did you know you might be standing on your own natural heating source for your home? The reason is geothermal energy. The ground warms up the lower you go down into the planet. There are now home kits that make using that heat a means to keeping your home warm throughout the cool fall and cold winter each year. Even better, the planet doesn’t charge you a monthly fee!

So, how does this process work? Pipes are sunk deep into the ground below your home. A system is then set up in your house that connects to them. The pipes are filled with a material that is reactive to heat. When it is pumped down the pipes by your system, it heats up significant. When it is pumped back up the interior of the home, it transfers its heat to another source that then radiates the heat into the house. You have heating just like that!

3 Tips in Buying a Used in Wall Gun Safe

Sunday, July 17th, 2011

A used in wall gun safe can be found in classified ads, garage sales, or online market places like eBay or Amazon. Consider the tips below, in buying one:

1. Get What You Need. It makes no sense to buy the cheapest, most compact gun safe that you can find if it does not suit your needs. If it will not be able to accommodate all the valuables that you want to store inside, then the purpose of the gun safe is basically defeated, and you will find yourself wishing you went with a new in wall gun safe instead.

2. Consider The Lock. If a gun safe is cheap and therefore you find the price attractive and yet it does not provide sufficient protection because the lock does not work, you may want to consider checking out another gun safe. If a lock is broken or inefficient, you could just as well use a file cabinet for your gun!

3. Consider The Price. There are sellers that place a high price markup even on used items, so watch out for these!
