Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011The 5 x 5 (5 sets of 5 reps) protocol is a very popular set and rep scheme to get stronger, and many people like using it in their turbulence training workouts. But there are several ways to actually do a 5 x 5 program – which is best?
Probably the most common way of doing 5 x 5 is simple – first you’ll do a basic warmup. This would just be a set or two of a light weight for maybe 8-10 reps on your main exercise.
Then, put your ‘working weight’ on the bar, and do it for 5 sets of 5 reps. A good rest period would be maybe 60-90 seconds between sets – two minutes, maximum.
You really only want to do 5 x 5 on one main exercise per large bodypart. If you do more than that, you’ll overwork the muscle. Also, you should only use a 5 x 5 on compound exercises.
